I enjoyed this book.It is an interesting murder novel, based on a true story. This novel did seem slow at times, but overall I enjoyed reading it.The main character, Ella Wallace, seems to have so many things against her, including her marriage to a man named Harlan, who is an opium addict. Before meeting Harlan she had a promising future, but that ended when she became infatuated with Harlan. This all happened against her aunts wishes ant the worst happens when Harlan gambles her property away. We move forward fifteen plus years and now Ella has three children and a great deal of debt on her property. The story takes place in the Florida Panhandle and it turns out Ella's property has a lake with "mystical" powers. Another strong character is the seedy banker, Clive, who wants Ella's property. He will do anything to own it. When it turns out that Ella will not be able to meet her mortgage another character appears. He appears in avery non-traditional way, by mail.

Just a couple of years ago, I was browsing in a bookstore and found a Michael Morris book titled "A Place Called Wiregrass". Well written books about Alabama and the South are my favorite reads, so the book came home with me. I finished it and loved it so much that I searched out and read everything Mr. Morris had published. They were all good. Very good.
A new book by Michael Morris, "Man in the Blue Moon", was released recently. I ordered it from as soon as it was offered for sale, and tried not to be impatient until it came. It was so worth the wait.
I have never been to Apalachicola, Florida, but after reading this book, I feel like I know the people and area so well that I could be at home there. Set in late World War I, the book leads us through hard-time struggles intensified by the ignorance and harshness that was a part of everyday living in that time and place. It demonstrates the power of family and friends who bond together to do what has to be done.
This book will make you laugh, cry, get extremely angry, and be awed by the strength of the characters. There's some folklore, some magic, and some unforgettable people. I hope you will read it, experience it, and appreciate it as much as I did.
Michael Morris, Your Granddad Would be Proud!
Michael Morris shows his skill as a writer from the first page of Man in the Blue Moon. By the time the reader completes that opening page, she's bound to read on. Not only is the protagonist introduced (Ella Wallace, age 35), but in the smoothest possible way, he also tells us essential elements of the setting (Dead Lakes Florida), the time period (during WWI), a minor plague in Ella's life (the annoying cat that stalks her store), and most importantly, her struggles (raising three sons alone in the midst of threatened foreclosure).
In the hands of a less skillful storyteller, the pieces Morris puts in place--a woman in peril; a no good husband who deserted her, an aunt who tried to warn her about that man and whose voice remains in Ella's mind, offering typically unheeded advice; three sons, each with his own pack of troubles; a greedy banker bent on repossessing her only remaining asset, a parcel of land that was her father's; a business barely afloat; and a stranger who arrives in town, hidden in a box Ella believed held a grandfather clock that would sell for enough to save her land--could spell the perfect melodrama, a form I never enjoy.
Instead, the tale unfolds seamlessly. Morris deftly develops characters and enchants the reader into seeing and smelling the setting where the action takes place. He never takes the easy course of manipulating the reader's emotion. Every response or concern for the characters this reader felt grew from legitimate elements of plot and character. There's definitely no element of melodrama here.
According to the author, this novel stems from a family story and his fictional telling of it is in part a way to honor his grandfather. After reading Man in the Blue Moon, I can only say, Michael Morris, your granddad would be proud!"
When we meet Ella Wallace, it seems the entire world has turned against her. Her beloved aunt who raised her is now dead, and her husband has left her alone to raise three boys while WWI is going on. Add to that the fact that her store is barely making her any money, and the only thing she has left is the land her father left her, which she finds has been lost in a bet by her husband to a slick, greasy banker. Ella won't give up though, and fights tooth and nail to keep her house and land. So when she receives notice of a clock being delivered to her already paid for, she thinks she can sell it and get rid of the banker once and for all. But the surprise that awaits her when she opens the crate is more than she bargained for, and while it does help stall the banker, it may just bring more trouble than it is worth.
I can't tell you just how much I adored this book. I am finding I truly love southern fiction, and this one is not to be missed. I savored every word, as this is not a book to be rushed through. I have gone back and bought this authors earlier works and cannot wait to read them!
This book was read for a book club and I almost didn't get it, However I was able to read a sample and was hooked. The author grew up in Appalachacola FL and this book is based on stories that his grandfather told him (He came to our book group in Florida) The interesting characters were a kind of mixed bag of people thrown together in a nicely integrated story that I could see being made into a movie .
I felt sorry for Ella - with a promising career as an artist, falling in love with a dishonest opium addict, forced to make a life and livelihood for herself and 3 sons by working in a store in order to save her property (given to her by her father and mortgaged by her long gone husband). Lanier brought some joy to her life, and possessed a magical power that brought him some fame and good fortune (and a dangerous situation as well). I wanted Clive to get paid back for his nastiness.
